Trex Q & A
Does Trex require gapping?
Yes. Trex is half plastic, half wood, and therefore expands and contracts under different temperatures. Gapping is also important to allow water run-off. For width to width gap, 1/4" is required. For cold weather installations, 3/8" is recommended. For end to end gap allow 1/16" for every 20°F difference between installation temperature and the highest temperature expected during the year.
What is Trex made from?
There are two types of Trex Decking - Composite Decking and PVC Decking. Origins, Accents, Contours and Brasilia are composite decking in the Trex product line. These products are manufactured from recycled low density polyethylene plastic (from grocery bags and shrink wrap) and recycled hardwood lumber (primarily from furniture plants).
Escapes Trex is a PVC decking that is made entirely from plastic.
Is Trex structural?
No. Because of its properties, Trex is intended solely for decking and railing. Do not use Trex for posts, beams, stringers or joists.
